The concept “alternative rock” is commonly used to refer to music that emerged in the mid-1980s. This combination of different styles found its audience in rebellious youth.

For most of its existence, alt-rock has been majorly determined by the denial of the commercialization peculiar to pop culture. The bands of the 1990s, unlike the earlier ones, received support and promotion of music labels, as well as traditional pop artists and became mainstream ones. Melomaniacs started to download alternative rock albums all over the world. The more uncompromising bands, which did not want to change their ideology, remained in the underground.

Their concerts moved from garages to multimillion concert venues. This fact, despite making the music not “alternative” at all, makes it easier for any fan to buy alternative rock music. The bands and their front men are being chased by teen girls and appear on the front pages of glamorous magazines, which contradicts the original essence of this musical genre. This statement is supported by increasing statistics of alternative rock downloads. Therefore, the replacement of the concept by ‘indie rock’ seems quite reasonable.
